I said I would report back on how my visit to Cromwell went in December to research a couple of books and I would have done it alot sooner if my computer hadn’t thrown a tantrum and refused to co-operate. I’m not really into computers but like what they can do for me. I should send mine to the Computer Doctor but then I’d have to do without it. So I plan to treat it like a toddler that misbehaves i.e. I’ll reward the good behaviour and ignore the bad. Not the best approach but I’m sticking with it.

So how was Cromwell? Gorgeous! Stunning! Wonderful! All of them accurately describe how amazingly beautiful that part of the South Island of New Zealand is. The car drive from Queenstown airport to Cromwell took longer than it should have because I had to keep getting out to take photos of the scenery. I was made incredibly welcome by my friend, Tash who put me up, and her mother Merryll and her partner Lex, who own Brookvale Cherries. They let me spend the day with them asking questions and showed me around the orchard and and packing house. They were very patient and didn’t mind how stupid my questions were. I knew the weather played a big part in producing a good crop but had no idea how much damage bad weather could do. Cromwell has cold winters and hot summers which is ideal for growing cherries. But if the temperature drops too much it can damage the buds forming on the trees, if it rains too much it can make the fruit swell and ruin it. When cold or rain threatens, helicopters get called in to help force warm air down onto the trees, or in the case of rain the helicopters hover over the orchard like giant clothes dryers to blow away the moisture. Great stuff for a writer and I’m looking forward to starting the book when I finish writing Glenn and Sherry’s story.

I also want to thank Michael and Gai Paradekooper who own the Paperplus store in Cromwell for arranging an author night for me at Feast’s Restaurant in the mall. It was held the same night that the local people were encouraged to do their shopping in their pyjamas to receive a discount on their Christmas shopping. Michael’s PJs bore a striking resemblance to the the Netherlands football kit but the piece de resistance had to be the yellow duck he carried on his arm. I DID enter the Annual Cherry Spit contest the following day – against my better judgement I might add. I should have listened to my better judgement, I managed two metres with my one and only spit and was beaten by a six-year-old girl who managed four metres. I wisely retired. Gai Paardekooper proved to be a champion spitter and I plan to employ her as my personal trainer if I return in December 2010 to try and improve my record. Merryll and Lex sent me a box of cherries for Christmas and I’ve been practising in the garden. On Christmas Day I doubled my distance and managed to hit the water tank. It was a proud moment. When my computer and I are on speaking terms I will post some photos.

Best Wishes,

Michelle

I said I’d report back on my visit to the South Island in December to research book #5 which – surprise! surprise! – will be set in a cherry orchard. The reason I haven’t done it sooner is because my computer is doing screwy things and I haven’t been able to post anything on my website. I like computers and electronic do-good things but only if I can point them and go, I really can’t be bothered when they throw tantrums and need attention. I should send it to the computer doctor but then I would have to do without it and so I’m going with a firm but fair attitude i.e. I will reward good behaviour, ignore the bad – and throw a tantrum myself. That probably isn’t a good idea and typing this is a major challenge but it’s how I plan to deal with it.

So how was Cromwell? Wonderful! Beautiful! Glorious! Take your pick. Central Otago is one of the most spectacular parts of New Zealand and I was made incredibly welcome by my friend Tash, who put me up, and her mother, Merryll and Merryll’s partner, Lex who own Brookevale, the cherry orchard I visited. They didn’t bat an eyelid at my more stupid questions. I got to wander around the orchard and pick cherries from the trees and stuff myself. I never knew there were so many different types of cherry and how critical the weather is to producing a good or bad crop. Too much rain and the crop can be ruined. On cold frosty nights, or after a rainstorm, helicopters come in to push the warmer air down or act like gigantic driers to blow away the moisture so the fruit doesn’t swell. Great stuff for a writer! I am going to have so much fun writing the book and will tell you more when I start it.

I also want to say thanks to Michael and Gai Paardekooper who own the PaperPlus bookstore in Cromwell. They put on a wonderful author evening for me on the same night that the townspeople were encouraged to visit the mall in their pyjamas to get a discount on their Xmas shopping. Michael’s orange PJs bore a striking resemblance to the Netherlands soccer kit but the piece de resistance had to be the yellow duck he carried. I will definitely post that photo when I get a chance. Gai is an experienced cherry pit spitter and I plan to ask her to be my personal trainer if I return in December 2010 for another attempt at the title.

And how did I do in the cherry spitting competition? I managed 2 metres with my one and only spit and got beaten by a six-year-old girl who spat 4 metres. Enough said. Merryll and Lex sent me a box of cherries for Christmas and I have been practising in my garden and can report I matched the six-year-old and hit the water tank. It was a proud moment.

When the computer and I have stopped throwing tantrums I promise I will put some photos up that show how lovely Cromwell is. If you are ever in the region, make sure you pay a visit to the town and buy some Brookevale cherries! They are the best!!

Best Wishes,
Michelle
