It’s surprising how much secondary characters can grab people’s attention.

April’s biological family, the trashy, bogun Gutsell family and their gas-guzzling cars are a hit and I’ve been getting messages asking if I have stories planned for Latoya, Lateesha and the rest of the crew. Sorry, I don’t. But they might just turn up in the future, probably somewhere they’re not supposed to be and doing something that they shouldn’t be doing.

Hand Me Down will be in New Zealand bookstores on November 4th, a little later in Australia. We are having our usual party on the night at Wrights Bookstore in Cambridge. If you’re in the area, you’re most welcome. Drinks, nibbles and a few laughs. Husbands/boyfriends are welcome. Tell them not to panic – there will be other men there.

A friend stayed last weekend and complained that she couldn’t move her feet in our spare bed. She gave up trying when she realised I’d made the bed and she was up against HOSPITAL CORNERS.

The CORRECT way to make a bed is one of the first practical skills a student nurse learns. Patient comfort came second to making sure they couldn’t escape. Hospital corners are better than security guards. If you’re staying the night at a friend’s house in winter and she’s a nurse (past or present), I suggest you take a sleeping bag or sleep on the sofa.

My next book, Hand Me Down

Hand Me Down is due for release in New Zealand and Australia at the end of 2011. It’s set in a cherry orchard in the South Island of New Zealand which is spectacular and incredibly beautiful part of the country. April is a bad girl. Tarn was a major in the infantry and has recently retired. April and Tarn have history – and none of it’s good.

There is a Cockatiel…

He bites Dan's finger in Bonkers.

In a pet shop in Browns Bay, Auckland named Snowy that I put in my first book, Bonkers. Or at least, I think he’s a Cockatiel? I have to thank my friend, Sharon, for providing the photo.

Snowy has lived at the pet shop for years and asks everybody to, “Givvusss a scratccch.” (Imagine drawn-out Cockatiel screech here). There’s a sign on the side of the cage warning that he bites but people still put their finger between the wires to scratch him, and do sometimes nipped. I get messages from people living on Auckland’s North Shore who have read Bonkers and know Snowy. They tell me how he is, that he hasn’t changed and is still a loopy Cockatiel with an attitude. So, if you live in the area and know Snowy, please drop me a line to let me know how he’s doing. And give him a scratch for me.
